Currently, his research is focused on canopy access and ecology of the Amazonian jungles of Peru. He has been part of an EarthWatch project - "Amazon Katydids"; to date this project has almost doubled the described species of katydids in northern Peru. As guest researcher on JASON X - Amazon Rain Forest, Phil climbed to the tops of the trees in order to study the contents of the many bromeliads living there.
He also volunteers his time as an instructor for Global Explorers on the Amazon Adventure workshop help in Peru. Generally he leads a hands-on Arthropod class, but also has lead ecology classes and canopy access techniques (rope climbing) classes as well.
